From historic downtown neighborhoods and the well-manicured landscapes of subdivisions, to quiet country living, Knox County has a variety of areas to suit the needs of individuals and families alike.
As Vincennes is the oldest city in Indiana, "Old Town" is the legal description of most of the downtown area. Much of Old Town is contained within a federal historic district. Homes in Old Town range from mansions to bungalows. Most were built between 75 and 125 years ago. The downtown area of Vincennes offers a nice compromise between urban and suburban living. Quiet residential streets exist just a block away from business streets. Downtown residents are almost able to lead a vehicle-free existence if they choose.
The Knox County communities of Bicknell, Bruceville, Decker, Freelandville, Monroe City, Sandborn, Vincennes and Wheatland offer quiet, small town living. Those who prefer can find country living, far from street lights and neighbors, yet within a short drive of community services. The composite index for Knox County is 70%. The index suggests that Knox County has a cost-of-living that is approximately 30% below the national average. This results from 32% below average costs for housing and health care costs at 14% below the national average. Dental costs are more than 25% below.
The high costs of transportation reported are somewhat suspect in that it appears that commuter costs are driving this result. This is a full 8.21% greater than the national average. However, the cause for consternation is the relatively high weight associated with this item. It is highly unlikely that the average mid-level manager uses taxi service or public transportation to any appreciable degree in this region of the country. The Knox County costs for the other components of this category are more in line with the national and regional averages.

Special Events
The Knox County area has many annual celebrations ranging from historical re-enactments to festivals that delight area residents and keep visitors coming back year after year. We invite you to view our annual meeting slide show here.
The Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous has been held each Memorial Day weekend in Vincennes since 1976 and is an internationally known event. The Rendezvous has developed into a fantastic mix of sights and sounds ranging from authentic Revolutionary War re-enactments to demonstrations of 18th and 19th century lifestyles. The battle re-enactments are complete with the cannons thundering and the crackling of musket fire throughout the weekend.
Crafts and skills demonstrated by participants include such things as blacksmithing, silver smithing, weaving, basket making, moccasin sewing and shingle splitting. For two days the grounds near the George Rogers Clark Memorial and the area known as the French Commons are transformed by fife playing, uniformed parades, historic ceremonies and much more on the sacred site of an actual Revolutionary War battle.
The park is along the historic Old Cahokia Trace which was a primary link for settlers heading west to St. Louis during the early 19th century.
The north side of the park reflects this point in time during Old Settler Days through re-enactors demonstrating lifestyles and skills of that period. They offer a wide variety of crafts, entertainment , food and wares while sharing their knowledge of the past in the present.
